Our Community

Dechinta Bush University_Blachford Lake Lodge

Blachford Lake Lodge is a proud partner to a number of different organizations that connect us to both our local, and global communities.

Dechinta University

Blachford Lake Lodge is a proud partner of Dechinta Bush University Centre for Research and Learning, which uses the lodge as the site for its programming. Led by northern experts, elders and professors, Dechinta offers classes on First Nations history, indigenous languages, self-governance, the environment and the arts.

While formal classes are open only to Dechinta students, for the majority of the tourism seasons, Dene or other aboriginal elders and trained lodge staff are available at Blachford to explain traditional ways of using medicinal and healing plants, preparing local foods such as caribou and smoked fish, and to talk about aboriginal art, history and culture.

Arctic FOXY

FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression among Youth) is a totally new way of talking with young women about sexual health, sexuality, and relationships. By putting the decision making back in their hands, no one is being told what to do, or what is right or wrong – everyone is being given the tools they need to make the best decisions for themselves.

FOXY uses traditional beading, theatre, digital storytelling, photography, and music to help teenage girls express their knowledge, opinions, and questions about health and love (and everything in between). With a strong focus on sexual health and empowered decision-making, girls across the North get to know themselves a little bit better and learn through the arts.

Blachford is proud to be one of the sites that FOXY uses for their summer programming.

Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival

The Festival happens over nine days each fall and features stories of profound journeys, unexpected adventures, and ground-breaking expeditions told by renowned authors, photographers, adventurers and film makers from around the world. Days after the Festival, the World Tour launches, bringing these films to fans in over 40 countries.

Blachford Lake Lodge is a proud sponsor of the Yellowknife showing of the festival annually.
