A big THANK YOU from Blachford Lake Lodge to the staff, volunteers and GNWT firefighters who responded to calls for help when the lodge was potentially threatened on Wednesday and Thursday last week.
Wednesday’s storm – already infamous for turning the afternoon skies black as night in Yellowknife – brought a switch in wind direction, putting the lodge potentially in the path of the huge fire burning north of Blachford. Eighteen volunteers spent two long days extending and improving fire breaks and clearing brush around the site, as well as pumping water to soak the main lodge building and cabins. They were joined by an ENR fire crew of eight, including two from Ontario, who shared their expertise with Blachford staff and set up further sprinkler systems.
The prompt action meant that 30 young women from FOXY (Fostering Open eXpression amoung Youth) were able to complete their second Peer Leader Retreat without interruption. This had been many months in the planning and successfully builds on the first such event last year.
Fire protection work is on-going and Blachford is now hosting a week-long Dechinta Bush University programme that started on Saturday as scheduled.
